The Benefits of Art on a Child’s Development

Written by: Alicia DiFabio

Did you know that art plays a critical role in early child development? Though it is often pushed aside as a hobby or frivolity, research demonstrates that children who engage in art develop much more than an appreciation for aesthetics. This is why the Mullica Hill Art Center is opening new Mommy & Me classes in November for children ages 4 and under.

Benefits of Art

How Is Art Beneficial To A Child’s Development?

1. Improves Motor Skills – Holding paintbrushes and crayons, cutting with scissors and molding with clay all help develop fine motor skills in children. This dexterity development is an important building block for writing.

2. Enriches Language  - Creating art together and talking about it during the process is an amazing way to practice language and foster self-expression.

3. Enhances Problem Solving Skills – When kids create art they are engaging in critical thinking skills and decision-making that translates to other areas of life.  With art, they are exploring and experimenting!

4. Promotes Creativity - Creativity is a key component to success and fosters open-mindedness and the ability to express feelings without words.

5. Correlates With Academic Success-  Studies demonstrate  a correlation between art and academic acheivement. Gifted children will use both their right and left brain together when solving difficult problems.

6. Increases Self-Esteem- When a child creates something beautiful, it enhances their self-esteem. It also gives them a postive outlet to occupy their “down time” instead of turing to T.V. or electronics.

Chelsea, one of the art instructors at the Mullica Hill Art Studio, is a huge proponent of starting art at a young age.  She believes boys and girls of all abilities and ages can express themselves artistically and benefit from all the inherent lessons within the artistic process.  “Everyone can learn,” she says.  “It doesn’t have to be perfect.”

In addition to the regular Tuesday and Thursday evening art classes for ages 5 and up, look for “Mommy & Me” art classes to start during the daytime hours in November.

Come to the Mullica Hill Art Studio and make the creative mess there!  They come up with the ideas, the lesson plans and the supplies while you simply enjoy your child’s masterpieces and the pride on their faces.
