Tomatoes Ten Ways

tomatoesIt’s prime tomato season in New Jersey and our local farm markets are stocked full of this local favorite!  As summer winds down, here are Ten great ways to enjoy fresh tomatoes, courtesy of Simple Bites.

Begin by Marinating the tomatoes in olive oil and fresh herbs and spices: Select 5 or 6 ripe tomatoes, wash and slice them, and add them to a large bowl. Drench in 1/2 cup olive oil. Add salt, pepper, basil, oregano and garlic, toss together and marinate for several hours.  

Once theyr’e done you can enjoy them any of the following ways:

1. Place sliced tomatoes on top of a toasted baguette

2.  Add mozzarella, basil and balsamic vinegar for caprese salad

3. Toss with hot capellini or pasta of your choice.

4.  Add to a prepared pizza crust with cheese, sauce and other toppings and bake until the crust is golden brown.caprese

5. Stuff inside a pita pocket with cucumber slices and sour cream or tzatziki.

6.  Add diced red onion, olives, red wine vinegar and feta cheese for a great Greek salad.

7. Spread pesto over an uncooked pastry shell, layer on tomatoes and parmesan cheese and bake until the pastry is golden brown.

8.  Place tomatoes on aluminum foil with 6-8 raw shrimp.  Fold and seal the foil and grill for 7-9 minutes.

9. Add 1 Tbsp sugar and 1 Tbsp rice vinegar and marinate another hour.  Then puree in a blender for a refreshing cold soup.

10. Spread mayonnaise on toast and add tomatoes, lettuce and crisp bacon for the best ever BLT!

Gloucester County 4-H Fair ~ July 26th- 29th

The annual Gloucester County 4H Fair will take place Thursday through Sunday, July 26th-29th  at the Gloucester County Fair Grounds – 275 Bridgeton Pike, Mullica Hill.  

The fair proceeds go to the programs, facilities, and services that benefit 4-H children throughout the year.

The fair will be open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 9 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  Horse shows start at 8 a.m. each day. Admission is free, but there is a $10 parking donation per carload, good for all four days.

 4H Fair Highlights

  • Exhibits: Visitors are invited to celebrate the accomplishments of 4‑H children who have worked throughout the year Alan-with-cowon a variety of programs. 
  • Shows: Enjoy the agricultural exhibits and contests for which the fair is known including the horse shows, Rabbit Shows, Dog Shows, Dairy Show, Sheep Show, Poultry show, Goat Show, Hog Shows and Annual Hog and Lamb Auction
  • Activities: The fair will also feature daily rides and games, magic shows, moon bounce, mechanical bull, rock wall, paint ball and craft exhibits, demonstrations and sales—lots of fun for the whole family! 
  • BBQ Dinners – Thurs through Sat. night from 4-7pm featuring delicious chicken and ribs.
  • Performers and Entertainment:  The main stage features a wide variety of free entertainment.  All 4-days are filled with a performers – from bands, singers, children oriented acts and dance troupes.

 

 

 

 

Mullica Hill Celebrates Christmas in July

Forget that the temperatures are in the 80’s – the Mullica Hill merchants are celebrating Christmas in July!  The celebration runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday July 26th and Friday July 27th and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday July 28th.

They invite you to get into the Christmas spirit early, as the real holidays are only six months away!  There will be special promotions, sidewalk sales, holiday items, décor, specialty holiday flavors and snacks.

Flick n’ Float Free Movie Night ~ July 20th

The Harrison Township Recreation Department and Raccoon Valley Swim Club invite you to enjoy a Flick ‘n Float event on Friday, July 20th.  All are welcome to watch Boss Baby at Raccoon Valley while sitting poolside – or floating in the pool!

Doors will OPEN at 7 pm so everyone can enjoy swimming early and the movie will be shown at dusk (8:30 p.m.)

Taco Salad Flag Dip

Turn traditional taco dip into a patriotic appetizer, perfect for your 4th of July picnic!

Directions

  • Cook meat with taco seasoning mix as directed on package; cool slightly.
  • Mix cream cheese, sour cream and salsa until blended; spread onto bottom of 13×9-inch dish. Top evenly with layers of meat mixture, 1 cup shredded cheese and lettuce.
  • Arrange olive slices on top left corner of dip to resemble stars on the US flag. Add rows of tomatoes and remaining shredded cheese for the stripes.

Woodbury Fireworks ~ June 30th

The City of Woodbury will put on its annual Fireworks display on Saturday, June 30th.

Festivities begin at 4:00 pm at Woodbury High School stadium where you’ll find food trucks of all varieties serving your favorite summertime treats – hot dogs, water ice and more.  There will be live entertainment from local band 88 MPH as well as a DJ playing your favorite hits.

Decorate your bike for the Bike Parade which begins at 4:30.

Fireworks are at Dusk.

4th of July Parade in Woodstown

Looking for a good old fashioned hometown parade to celebrate Independence Day? The Annual Woodstown 4th of July Parade has taken place since 1932 and many say it’s straight out of Norman Rockwell painting with spectators lining Main St. waving flags.  Appropriately, this year’s parade theme is Small Town Americana.

Watch the Parade

The 2018 parade will take place at 10am on  Wednesday, July 4th, rain or shine. The parade route starts at Allen Avenue, go up South Main St. through the Center of town, up North Main St. and end at Marlton Park.  It usually lasts 1 1/2-2 hours. 
 
** All participants should park at Marlton Park (123 Marlton Rd., Pilesgrove) and a shuttle bus will drop you off at Memorial Lake Park.

Enter the Parade

 

There’s nothing better than a good old fashioned community parade complete with firetrucks, homemade floats and kids on decorated bikes or strollers!

All parade entries must be decorated and music accompaniment is encouraged!  You can have a vehicle, bike or walking entry – your choice – but all entries should be family friendly.  Participants must fill out this registration form.

Judging4th july

1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded to groups who best represent the Small Town Americana theme.

Judging will be based on the following criteria:

1. Creativity (design, music, participants, props etc.)
2. Unified theme:  Yankee Doodle Dandy
3. Eye Catching
4. Originality
5. Effort in Design
6. Patriotic Spirit
